Visas & Residence Permits
Premium visa, Occupation & Retirement permits, residency by investment — which route fits your passport.
Mauritius runs one of the more accessible residency regimes in the region, administered by the Economic Development Board (EDB). The right route depends on your reason for moving and, in several cases, your nationality — use the passport-specific guides below for the detail that applies to you.
The main routes
Occupation Permit
A combined work-and-residence permit for investors, professionals and self-employed applicants. Valid up to 10 years and renewable. Each category has its own income or investment threshold.
Premium Visa
A long-stay option for remote workers, retirees and long-term visitors earning from outside Mauritius. Valid for a year, renewable, with no local-employment requirement.
Residence Permit (Retired)
For applicants aged 50 and over who transfer a qualifying monthly sum into a local account.
Residency by real-estate investment
Buying qualifying property (PDS, IRS, Smart City) above the set value confers residence for the owner and dependents.
Typical process
- Confirm the route that fits your situation (try the Visa Checker tool).
- Assemble documents — passport, proof of funds, background checks.
- Submit through the EDB portal.
- Receive approval in principle, then complete biometrics on arrival.
Rules and thresholds change periodically. Always confirm current figures with the EDB before committing, or speak to a registered adviser.
